Since my Tigers appear to have already gone south for the year (15-26 since I posted about them having the best record in baseball), after struggling gamely with injuries and a makeshift pitching staff all season, it's time to turn our attention here at the Tower to football.
To those paying close attention, college football season already started last Thursday with a slate of Division II games. If you must know, the Glenville State Pioneers ran past the Bowie State Bulldogs 29-19 in the first official game of the season. However, the big boys start to take the field tonight with 18 of the teams from the division formerly known as I-A in action, including my alma mater Iowa State.
Tonight marks the first game of the Gene Chizik era. If they can't handle the Golden Flashes of Kent State (a middling 6-6 in the MAC last year), I have concerns for the rest of the season. Sadly, I don't have season tickets this year so the Cyclones will have to attempt to win without me.

Oh boy, Brian. You cannot discount those MAC teams so easily. They have that "something to prove, we don't get respect" mentality.
It may be a good thing you don't have season tickets.
I can say this as it is doubtful the Spartans can win any Big 10 games this year.... I am looking forward to basketball.
I'm ready! Or, I was...
I just finished watching the game via the "Clone Zone" video feed. I was pretty excited about seeing it live over the net (paid $8.95 for a month's subscription). As you astutely noted, it is going to be a long season. Our schedule will make every game (yeah, even UNI) a difficult one to win. Chizik was pretty highly touted down here, even before he was hired by ISU. But we might have to wait another year to see any real improvment. The one bright spot I was was JJ Bass, but there was some real lackluster play by Meyer and the O-line.
At least we have the Packers and Lions this year, right? Oh...hmm...
Are you going down to Ames for any of the games? I might be interested in a road trip to Ames (not to the football game, though, sorry).
I don't discount all MAC teams, Ma, just the bad ones. Clearly we are on our way to a one or two win season if we are lucky.
Hey, but at least Rutgers handily beat their bad MAC opponent. Were you there, Steve?
If they keep playing like this, some cheap tickets might start showing up on Stub Hub, and then I'd consider going down for a game. I'll keep you posted, Kim.
The cheapest games will probably be in November. Is that too late in the year for you to want to road trip down there?
Nah, November would be fine. I thought it might be fun to wander around campus a bit and meet up with a friend or two if possible. Mostly, I think excursions out of Rochester sound pretty fabulous. =)
First off, if you didn't know about it:
You can vote for next year's ISU helmet. Voting ends TODAY, so get on it.
Believe me, I am absolutely ready for football with the Twins botching the contracts of Hunter and Santana. Although the only bright spots of my football season will likely be Adrian Peterson and a new coach for the U of M.
Oh, Amy and I have been back in the cities as of... Wednesday night. I As we are both gainfully unemployed at the moment, we may have to keep the money spending down, but we definatly have to get together soon- we are headed to the Fair this weekend if you are up for a trip, otherwise a Gopher football game might be fun...
Oh, and You may have noticed a football related e-mail in the last day or two, as the yahoo fantasy league is back up and running. The question is, who will be the sucker who drafts the cursed V. Young?
I was not at the trouncing of Buffalo, but I listened to the first quarter on the radio. BTW, you can watch the entire game condensed to 50 minutes at scarletknights.com. I will be going to one game this fall, Sept. 29 against Maryland.
